M12: the universal talent by Phoenix Contact

When it comes to quickly and reliably cabling power, data, and signals, the M12 connector has taken on a prominent role in the smart wiring concept. Originally designed for cabling sensors,  proximity switches, and light barriers, the M12 has now become the leading connection system for sensors and actuators. The components are robust and user-friendly, while pin assignments are internationally standardized as is the specialized coding that prevents incorrect connections. Timesaving connection concepts speed up commissioning, and clearly structured installations simplify error diagnostics.
Experts anticipate that data volumes will grow in the double digits each year – and the M12 plug-in connector with X-coding based on the Cat6A standard offers sufficient spare capacity to meet this challenge. For this and for the commonly used Cat5 cabling based on four-pin D-coding, Phoenix Contact offers a comprehensive product range of pre-assembled cables as well as plug-in connectors that can be assembled in the field. When starting new projects, in particular, it makes sense to opt for a generously proportioned network infrastructure with Cat6A cabling. Four-pair S/FTP copper cables with separate shielding for each wire pair and end-to-end shielding are well suited for this purpose. The wire pair shielding is maintained in the plug-in connector all the way into the Xcoded connector profile in order to optimize transmission quality. But even where pre-assembled cables with molded M12 plug-in connectors are not a viable option, this does not mean that installation costs necessarily must rise. The shielded, configurable plug-in connectors allow 10 Gigabit network cables to be connected reliably and with ease in a matter of seconds. When IDC connection technology is used, cables are simply stripped, the shielding removed, the individual wires secured in place in colorcoded clamp compartments and cut flush. When the plug-in connector halves are then screwed in place, the insulation displacement connectors make contact with the wires, and the shielded connection between the cable and the housing has been established. Data transmission is not the only area where the M12 plug-in connector has been upgraded; there are also several new applications in voltage and current. Its compact design and simple locking mechanism mean that the M12 is ideal for applications where space is at a premium. The new internationally standardized coding used throughout the Phoenix Contact’s product range opens many new applications. The K- and S-coded versions of the M12 power plug-in connector are designed for an AC power supply of 630 V AC and 16 A. They make it possible to connect AC motors and drives as well as frequency converters, motor switches, power supplies, and lighting systems in a way that saves space. The L- and T-coded M12 power connectors have been designed for low-voltage DC power supply units and is rated up to 63 V and 16 A. This makes supplying I/O modules, network devices, and motors with power a snap.
