We have been serving the Indian market via a sales partnership with a local authorized dealer since the 1990s. In October 2024, we opened our fourth production facility in India in addition to the headquarters in Mauerstetten in Bavaria (Germany), Ostrzeszów in Poland (1994) and Zhangjiagang in China (2006). So the plant in Halol near Vadodara is not so much about breaking new ground in India. After all, we have worked successfully in the market for more than 30 years. This valuable foundation has ensured that we have continued to develop and that our brand has achieved a certain level of recognition. So now it was time to take the next step. By manufacturing locally, we are now able to meet the demand for Mayr products “made in India” and thus serve the Indian market directly. Mayr power transmission is a family-owned company with more than 125 years of history. We are a leading manufacturer of safety brakes, torque limiters and shaft couplings. Mayr power transmission employs more than 1,350 people worldwide. In addition to the production subsidiary in India, we operate two production facilities outside Germany in Poland and China. The quality products from mayr® power transmission are used in a very wide range of industries. They are primarily designed for application in electrically driven machines and systems. They can be found, amongst other things, in robots, machine tools, packaging and printing machines as well as in elevators, wind power plants and in the stage technology. We are active in over 60 branches worldwide. Our products prove themselves every day in all subsectors of mechanical engineering and secure the movements of this world. There is hardly an area that we do not serve. In all cases, our innovative products add safety and reliability to machinery.
Our new line of shaft couplings, the ROBA® DS Aluminium for example is definitely an exciting product that we are currently launching on the market. The aluminium version has almost the same properties as the steel version of our ROBA® DS but weighs considerably less. This results in a significantly lower mass moment of inertia. When used in test benches, for example, this brings in major advantages. One area of application for such test benches with ROBA® DS Aluminium couplings is the development and construction of electric drives, an industry with a great future in India, too.

The Indian market is extremely interesting because of the wide range of possible applications. For example, robotics and medical applications are on the rise. We have extensive experience in all these areas and can offer real added value with our products. In the current phase, however, the focus is still on our elevator brakes. India is clearly growing in height, so elevators are needed, and we are a leader in this area. For example, you can see our brakes as soon as you arrive at Bangalore airport and take a look into one of the glass elevators.

From my point of view, it is difficult to talk about the market in general. As I said before, we are active in a wide variety of industries and each of them has their own requirements and trends. However, we generally see a development towards electrification of drives which leads to a growing demand for components like we offer them. We also see increasingly complex applications like in the fields of robotics or medical technology I mentioned before, with a high demand for precision and reliability. India has already arrived in this high-tech segment in many areas, so this is something we will focus on going forward. Our products with their straightforward construction as a basis are an ideal fit for this kind of application.
AI-UPDATE: Can you please brief us about your Manufacturing facilities and R&D activities in India?
With the establishment of Power Transmissions India Pvt. Ltd. we are focussing on two strategic objectives. Firstly, we are investing in strengthening our sales and distribution network and optimising cost-effective logistics for goods from our main plants. The second is to establish a local supply chain and production facility for safety brakes, in line with our local-for-local approach.
The initial capacity is 2,000 units per month. Research and development initiatives for the brakes produced there are aimed at meeting the economic requirements of the Indian market without compromising on Mayr’s customary quality.

We value sustainable growth, which we can also organise in a stable manner. In view of the global situation, our Indian subsidiary gives us more room for manoeuvre and is definitely a milestone in our international development. We combine the efficiency and meticulousness of the people from the Bavarian Allgäu region with the forward-thinking determination of our Indian colleagues to conquer the market with the highest growth rates worldwide.
